Spring Feeling Cocktail

Spring Feeling Cocktail
1/4 Lemon Juice. (1/2 oz Lemon Juice)
1/4 Green Chartreuse. (1/2 oz Green Chartreuse)
1/2 Plymouth Gin. (1 oz Plymouth Gin)
Shake well and strain into cocktail glass.

I knew when I read this recipe that it would be something that Mrs. Flannestad would be particularly taken with. In fact she liked it so much that we blew threw the nearly empty Green Chartreuse bottle in no time. She has promised to buy another, as I primarily use it for her favorite cocktails, The Last Word and now Spring Feeling.

Well, that’s not entirely true, I do often use it for Manhattan variations I myself enjoy. But volume-wise, we go through a lot more in her cocktails.

I mentioned this cocktail to a couple bartender friends, and they usually said, “Oh, like a Last Word…” Well, it is a bit like a Last Word in that it involves Gin, Green Chartreuse, and Citrus. However, it is a much, much drier cocktail, being half Plymouth Gin and equal parts Lemon and Green Chartreuse.

In fact, I think I kind of like it a bit more than the traditional equal parts Last Word Cocktail.

Well, you may, or you might not. But it is a fun cocktail to order, with that great name. “I’d like a Spring Feeling, please.”

Memorize the proportions, and give it a try the next time you are out.

This post is one in a series documenting my ongoing effort to make all of the cocktails in the Savoy Cocktail Book, starting at the first, Abbey, and ending at the last, Zed.

    • But, hm, which should the cocktail refer to?

      * Once More, with Feeling (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer
      * Once More with Feeling (album), an album by Placebo
      * Once More, with Feeling!, a film starring Yul Brynner, based on a stage play
      * Once More, with Feeling (book), a book by Victoria Coren and Charlie Skelton about making a porn movie
      * Once More with Feeling (Billy Eckstine album), a 1960 album by Billy Eckstine
      * “Once More With Feeling”, a song on The Cooper Temple Clause’s third studio album, Make This Your Own
      * “Once More with Feeling”, a song from Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly’s 2006 album The Chronicles of a Bohemian Teenager

I mean, we do have a Buffy stand up in our garage…

  1. LOL. I’ll have to give this one a try. I tend to make Green Chartreuse sours with Yellow Chartreuse instead because they often have lime—not so much a spring feeling for me as a green feeling. But the lemon sounds nice.

  2. Hmm… interesting! I’m more used to the lime version (the Green Ghost, which is 4:1:1 instead of 2:1:1) which is rather tasty!

    • Not familiar with the Green Ghost Cocktail, though Green Ghost was a rather expensive glow in the dark board game my sister and I convinced my parents we needed after seeing the ads on TV. Unfortunately, it was so complicated, we never did learn how to play it properly.

  3. Considering finally going the (thankfully still) $45 for the Green Chartreuse and wondering if you think it would play well with Anchor Genevieve in place of your Plymouth? Would it play well at all?

    • Hm, I think all Genevieve might dominate this cocktail in a somewhat unpleasant manner.

However, half Genevieve and half another less confrontational Gin and you might be on to something.

Give it a try and let me know.

  4. Spring Feeling is the first Green Chartreuse cocktail I’ve tried and I am liking it.

Green Ghost is from Cafe Royal Cocktail Book and is lime juice rather than lemon, as Frederic says. Also from CRCB is the Greenfly which also 4:1:1 but with lemon juice.
